Local Plan
The Macclesfield Borough Local Plan is the statutory planning document for local issues for the whole of the Borough. It was adopted as an Altered Plan in January 2004. Together with the Structure Plan prepared by the County Council for wider strategic matters, it forms the Development Plan. The County Council adopted the Structure Plan in 1999 and this will provide strategic guidance for the County until 2011. The Local Plan is very important to people in all walks of life, since it greatly affects the way in which land and buildings are used, the links with the transport system and the likely timing of development.
How the Plan is Arranged
The Plan is in two parts. Firstly, it sets out boroughwide policies on a series of topic areas, specifically on Environment, Green Belt and Countryside, Recreation and Tourism, Housing and Community Uses, Employment, Transport and Shopping. The Plan also sets out specific policies for the central areas of Macclesfield, Wilmslow, Handforth, Alderley Edge, Knutsford and Poynton. This enables the Council to deal selectively with the problems and opportunities of each of these areas, whilst incorporating a strategic approach for the Borough overall. In this way the individuality of the towns can be enhanced and their character retained. Policies on implementation are followed by development control policies, which provide detailed criteria for all types of development and more specific guidance on individual topics.
Saved Policies
The Council in March 2007 applied to the Secretary of State to save policies in the Macclesfield Borough Local Plan (Jan 2004) in line with the requirements of PPS12 Local Development Frameworks, "Creating Local Development Frameworks: A companion Guide to PPS12" and DCLG Protocol.
The Secretary of State’s Direction has now been received and is available under Saved Policies . The schedule lists all the “saved “ policies. Those policies not listed in the schedule expired on 27th September 2007.
