Disley

Disley

Situated at the north-end of the borough is the pleasant little village of Disley. The village although not mentioned in the Domesday Survey, is of ancient foundations and can be traced back to the time when it was but a clearing in the large area of Macclesfield Forest. The main building of historic interest is the parish church of St Mary, a Perpendicular structure consecrated in 1558 but largely re-built in the first half of the 19th century. At this rebuilding the Perpendicular was retained, as was the early 16th century timber roof with its many bosses. There are several monuments of interest as well as fragments of medieval stained glass and a handsome organ case of 1836..

Close to the church is the attractive village with shops around the small classical fountain of 1823, the focal point of Fountain Square. Close by, at the foot of the bank on which the church stands, is the school (also of 1823) and the Ram’s Head, a most pleasant inn that was built in Victorian times though in Tudor style.
