02/07/2008  Appeal for Return of Ian Curtis Memorial

Cemetery staff are appealing for the return of the memorial stone of Ian Curtis, the iconic lead singer of Joy Division.
It is believed to have  been taken some time between lunchtime on Monday 30 June and early on Tuesday morning from Macclesfield Crematorium, Prestbury Road. Ian’s widow Debbie has been informed.
Bearing the epitaph, “Love Will Tear Us Apart”,  the memorial is visited by music fans who travel from all over the world each year wishing to pay their respects, often leaving small mementos of affection for Curtis and his music.
Bill North, Service Manager for Community and Leisure, Macclesfield Borough Council, says: “I’m shocked this has happened. Someone’s gone to a great deal of trouble to remove the memorial stone and I hope our appeal will help return it as soon as possible.”
If anybody has any information regarding the theft, please contact Macclesfield Police on 01625 610000 or Macclesfield Bereavement Services on   01625 422330/422408/504511.
